Need a PNG instead of a HEIC? This free converter turns your HEIC files into PNG right in your browser — no uploads, no account, and no software to install. Everything below explains how it works, what changes when you convert, and how to get the best result.

How to convert HEIC to PNG

  1. Add your HEIC files above — drag and drop, click to browse, or paste. Nothing is uploaded.
  2. Each file is decoded and re-encoded to PNG on your device, right in the browser.
  3. Download each PNG individually, or grab the whole batch as a single ZIP.

Why convert HEIC to PNG?

HEIC is a good fit for iPhone and iPad camera photos, but it isn’t always the right choice when you need to share, upload, edit, or archive an image. Converting to PNG gives you a file that’s better suited to those jobs.

What you gain with PNG:

  • Lossless quality
  • Transparency support
  • Universal compatibility

Because PNG is lossless, the converted files are often larger than the HEIC originals — that’s the trade-off for perfect fidelity.

What is High Efficiency Image Container (.heic)?

HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) is the format iPhones and iPads have saved photos in by default since iOS 11 in 2017. It stores one or more images inside a HEIF container, compressed with HEVC — the same codec used for high-efficiency video.

HEVC compression uses smart intra-frame prediction, variable block sizes, and efficient entropy coding to pack roughly the same visual quality into about half the bytes of a JPEG. A single HEIC file can also carry 10-bit color, an alpha channel, depth maps, and multi-frame sequences like Live Photos.

What is Portable Network Graphics (.png)?

PNG (Portable Network Graphics) is a lossless format built for the web and for graphics work. It records every pixel exactly, supports clean transparency, and opens everywhere JPG does.

PNG uses DEFLATE, a lossless compression algorithm, so re-saving never degrades the image. It supports a full 8-bit alpha channel for smooth transparency and up to 24-bit color, which is why it is the go-to for anything with sharp edges or text.

When PNG is the right choice

PNG is a strong pick for:

  • Logos, icons, and graphics
  • Screenshots
  • Images that need transparency
  • Editing and long-term archiving

Quality and file size

PNG is lossless, so it reproduces the decoded image pixel-for-pixel with no compression artifacts. That fidelity is ideal for graphics, text, and archiving. Because PNG is lossless, the converted files are often larger than the HEIC originals — that’s the trade-off for perfect fidelity. Need a specific file size instead? Try our compress-image tool.

Is it private?

Yes. Everything runs locally in your browser, so your HEIC files are never intentionally sent to a server. Read more on our privacy page, or see whether converting images online is safe.

Frequently asked questions

Is this HEIC to PNG converter free?

Yes. It’s completely free with no signup, no watermarks, and no per-file limits beyond sensible batch caps that keep your browser responsive.

Are my HEIC files uploaded to a server?

No. Conversion happens entirely in your browser using WebAssembly and your device’s own image tools, so your files are never intentionally sent to a server.

Does converting HEIC to PNG reduce quality?

PNG is a lossless format, so every pixel from the decoded image is preserved exactly — there’s no visible quality loss.

Will converting to PNG keep transparency?

Yes. PNG supports an alpha channel, so transparent areas in your HEIC files are preserved. If you’d rather flatten them onto a white background, you can turn transparency off in the settings.

Can I convert multiple HEIC files at once?

Yes. Add up to 50 files per batch, convert them together, and download them individually or as a single ZIP.

Does the HEIC to PNG converter work on a phone?

Yes. It runs in any modern browser — Chrome, Edge, Firefox, and Safari — on Windows, macOS, Android, and iPhone or iPad. Because it works on-device, you can convert straight from your phone’s photo library.

Is there a file size limit?

You can convert files up to 100 MB each. Because everything runs in your browser, very large files depend on your device’s available memory.
